Geometry and topology are two very important subjects in the discipline of mathematics. Geometry and topology are now a well established tools in the theoretical physicists tool kit. Their work on this theorem lead to a joint Abel prize in 2004. Since the late nineteenth century, differential geometry has grown into a field concerned more generally with geometric structures on differentiable manifolds. Maybe we should have considered doughnuts instead, but that's so cliché, and I like bagels better.
